DCIHL Playoff Semi-Finals
Goon Squad All Stars 3, Kimchi Comets 2 Da Beers 8, Soju Soldiers 3
Daejeon, South Korea- Eric Bannerman provided all the offence the Goon Squad All-Stars would need to advance to the first ever DCIHL Final.
Bannerman scored all three goals and made several huge defensive plays as the All-Stars downed the Kimchi Comets 3-2 on Friday.
This was a defensive battle, with All-Stars goalie Rick Weldon and Comets netminder Colin Donelle both turning in stellar performances.
Jon Deblois scored both goals for the Comets.
"It was a tight game, a little chippy at times, "Said Bannerman, "but when you're playing for a spot in the Finals, you do whatever you can to make it. You have to raise your game, and I think we did that."
Comets defenceman Ken Vantour agreed.
"They played a better team game that we did. We didn't have much of a passing game. They beat us to the puck, and they focused in on Jon (Deblois). When they stopped him, they stopped the offence. Next week, we have to get everyone involved. More passing. It was disappointing because we know we can beat these guys. We have before."
The Comets won 2 of the three games vs. the All Stars in the regular season, but couldn't come back in this one.
NOTES: This was the first game in the history of the DCIHL that featured a scoreless half. All the scoring was done in the first half in this game...The Comets were without Hoang Tran and injured Lee Chae Sam...Brett, the man with no last name, filled in admirably for Lee...Nick MacFadden made the pass of the game with a cross crease feed to Bannerman.
In the second game of the night, Da Beers, scored 6 unanswered goals to down the Soju Soldiers 8-3 to set up a battle of the top two regular season teams in the DCIHL Finals.
Waylon Chiski had his best game of the year with a goal and 5 assists, Jason French added 3 goals and two assists. Caleb MacIvor, the leagues leading scorer during the regular season, had 2 goals and 1 assist. Chris Goodman and Kim Beom Jin added singles.
Sean Meyers had 2 goals for the Soldiers. Michael Jones, playing on a wonky (Yes, I just said wonky) foot and twisted knee, added a goal at the end of the game.
Injured Ed McEntee was replace in goal by Rick Weldon for Da Beers.
"It's great to be in the Finals," said Chinski. "We worked hard all year to make it to this point. Now we just have to go out next week and finish it off. It won't be easy though."
Da Beers will face off against the Goon Squad All-Stars in the Chamionship Game, while the Soldiers will meet The Kimchi Comets in the Bronze medal game.
"It's disappointing," said Jones. "We battled hard, but without any spares, it's tough to get any momentum going. Hats off to Da Beers, they deserved the win and good luck to them in the Final."
NOTES: Jones injured his foot blocking a shot off the stick of Da Beers Ryan Dumont and then twisted his knee falling into the boards after catching a rut in the ice...MIA for the Soldiers were Shin Dae Jin and Song Gook Ho.
Note from Ken,
Thanks to everybody who played in the league this year. I think it was a great first season. We had some points of contention that will be ironed out next year, but overall, the level of play was great.
Congratulations to the Goon Squad All-Stars and Da Beers. Good luck in the Championship game. Regardless of the outcome, You will always be remembered as the first two teams to fight for the Championship trophy.
As for next year, I would like to see more participation from the Korean players in regards to Refereeing and scorekeeping. This year was basically a 5 man rotation for the refs. Waylon, Eric, Sean, Nick and myself handled most of the reffing duties. As for scorekeeping, it was basically Michael, Rupert, Caleb and Ben. Special thanks to Matt for Fridays score keeping duties.
My point is this...there are 37 people in this league and only five or six have reffed, and only a handful have done scorekeeping. Next year we plan on having a schedule made for reffing and scorekeeping in an effort to get people more involved in the league.
If I've left out your name in regards to reffing and scorekeeping, my apologies.
We can discuss any changes you would like to make at the END OF SEASON banquet. For those who don't know, the party will be held in Cheongju at 4 PM, Saturday, June 28th. Let's try to get the whole league there. Wives and girlfriends are welcome to come.
Thanks again for a great first season and I hope all of you will be coming back for an even better second year.
Cheers, Ken
