The gold medal game of the DCIHL took place on Friday night. It was the highly anticipated match between the Black Aces and the Killer Bees. The Black Aces were hoping to carry the momentum from their upset win over the White Knights into this match up. While the Killers Bees were hoping to continue their winning ways after they defeated the Hammers the week before. Tensions were high before the match as each teams tried to settle their stomachs before the game. There was even some jawing and threats being exchanged between the two teams.
Taking to the ice the Killer Bees were highly unmanned. Season injuries and players given their plane tickets home had depleted the team to just five members, while the Black Aces had a full bench with multiple changes. Matt Acheson of the Black Aces was quoted, ¡°If we can control the play and get them running around they will run out of gas. Then we can take it too them.¡±
At puck drop the game started off with a bang. The Killer Bees rode the hard work of Hoang Tran. Through his relentless puck battling skills they were able to jump out to a quick 3 goal lead. However, Aces¡¯ defenseman Eric Ramirez was able to pot a couple quick ones to get them back into the game and make the score 3-2. Brad Russell would get the natural Hat trick to make it 4-2. Black Ace forward Matt Acheson (1g, 1a) scored late in the period, and the first period ended with the score 4-3 for the Killer Bees.
The second period started pretty fast and furious. Each team could sense that the next goal was critical and could determine the momentum for the rest of the game. However, it was, Killer Bee Captain, Waylon Chinski that would snap a quick one by the goalie which almost seemingly gave them new life and sparked one of their best periods of hockey all season. The defensive tandem of Brad Sears (3a) and Ryan Dumont (1a) seemingly shut down any attack by the Black Aces. While up front the Bee¡¯s rode the hard work of Tran (3a), the playmaking abilities of Russell (4g, 3a) and the hot hand of their captain, Chinski (5g, 2a). They scored 5 unanswered goals. Black Ace Ramirez (3g, 1A) got one goal very late in the game to make the final score 9-4. It was a hard fought battle but the DCIHL Cup was awarded to the Killers Bees.
After the game Black Ace Ken Vantour was quoted saying, ¡°We out numbered them and they made us look like the shorthanded team. They earned it!¡± While Ryan Dumont of the Bees said, ¡°It all came together finally after a rollercoaster season. Our defense played their best game. Our offense was unstoppable. It was good to see a complete game effort.¡± Talking with Bee Captain Waylon Chinski he had nothing but praise for his team, ¡°We saved our best game for last. Everyone did what they were expected to do and just played exciting hockey. It was a complete team effort.¡±
Congratulations to the Killer Bees the Deajon-Cheongju Ice Hockey League Season 2 Champions!!!
