Semi-final 1 Black Plague 6 – Heroic Hites 1 Cheongju, ROK As the game pre-game clock wound down, all eyes were on the Heroic Hites’ dressing room. Would they have enough skaters to ice a team? What was their plan in a game that they would surely be seen as underdogs to win? It turns out that they would summon enough resources to have a game, but, as has been the case all season, the Hites were lacking key players when they were needed most. Questions will surely be asked in the off-season and most pundits predict a serious shake-up in Hites’ roster, with captain Bart Sears rumored to be exploring options as he becomes a free agent.
The Black Plague exploited their opponents’ lack of manpower and would skate to a comfortable win. The Plague started the game with intention and did not let up through most of the first. Eric Bannerman opened the account at 6:15 of the period after banging in a rebound off his own misdirected pass. Caleb MacIvor partnered up with Geoff Martin for the Plague’s second 5 minutes later at 11:30 of the first when MacIvor found the back of the net with an impossible angle backhander. MacIvor would then turn helper picking up 3 assists on the night. `The Kid’ An Hyung Min popped in the first of two tallies on the night at 16:25 with help from Kyle Cassily followed quickly by Ben Ramirez at 17:55 who would also end with a pair. `The Kid’ picked up his second at 21:58 with assists from MacIvor and Bannerman while the Hites finally found an answer to the solid Ed Mcentee with one of their own from Colin MacIsaac at 22:57 of the first.
At the halfway mark, Bart Sears would take the time to review some strategy with his troops while an anonymous heckler made his way to the Plague bench to share some insight of his own. With some final words of inspiration from Captain Sears, the Hites made a fresh go of it in the second and came out with better puck movement and better use of the ice. Unfortunately, they could not find the back of the net again in the game as Ed McEntee made an auspicious return to the Black Plague line-up. The second period turned out to be a more subdued affair. Ramirez potted his second of the night with the lone goal of the period at 14:59 as the Plague booked themselves a spot in next Friday’s championship game. The Hites now look to a match-up with Made in China for the bronze medal.
“We’ve already begun preparing for our battle with Team Anthrax in the final,” quoted Plague captain Geoff Martin. “It’s less than a week away and we have so much to do, but for now I’d like to thank the Hites for playing a great game and I wish them luck in the next round,” he added.
Hat tip to Hites’ Goalie Rick Weldon who faced over 50 shots on the night and kept the score line honest.

Cheongju Ice Link --- In the second game of the semi-finals, Anthrax dominated and controlled Made In China to skate away to an easy 5-1 victory. Although much hype had preceded the game, Anthrax started strong with a fury of chances and opportunities and played with a heart and poise that will make them great contenders against The Black Plague in next week’s final.
The game began with Anthrax abusing the defensive abilities, or lack thereof, of China, instead sacrificing goaltender Colin Donelle to the wolves. The early tie was broken when Waylon Chinski picked up a sloppy rebound at the five minute mark and slapped it over the blocker hand of China’s goalie.
The first half continued with Anthrax moving back and forth between strong offensive chances by Chinski, Jason French, and Erich Ramirez while completely containing the advances of Brad Russell, Andrew Vaughn and Chris Goodman. Anthrax employed a baby-smothering defence of Kevin Phillips, Erich Ramirez, and Mike Jones that limited the number of shoots against Anthrax goalie Kris Bergeman. The first half closed with a breakaway that Chinski put into the Chinese goal.
In the second half, China began to realize that there was a hockey game going on around them and decide to start trying to put some offense together. Although Bergeman faced an increase in the number of shots, true scoring opportunities were still abated through strong back checking and smart defensive positioning.
Three minutes into the second, Jason French slipped in a weak goal, while Travis St.Peter concluded his DCIHL Season 3 post-season with a couple of high-light reel goals. China’s fruitless efforts were capped off with a late goal by Russell.
Next week will feature the bronze medal show down between the Heroic Hites and Made in China, while all the glory will go to the winner of the first-seeded Black Plague and the second seeded Team Anthrax.
